Bashir Bello

Development Journalist

Bashir Bello is an award-winning Nigerian journalist and development reporter with nearly two decades of experience. He currently works with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano. He previously served as Kano State Bureau Chief and correspondent for Vanguard Newspapers and has worked across major media centres, including Kaduna, Katsina and Kano.

Bello specialises in development journalism, particularly maternal and child health, child birth spacing and rural infrastructure. His human-interest stories highlight the challenges faced by underserved communities and have helped draw government attention to gaps in public healthcare and the need for essential interventions.

He has also covered politics, security and other socio-political issues across northwestern Nigeria. Beyond his reporting, Bello founded NEWS EQUAL, an independent digital news platform focused on amplifying the voices and concerns of underserved communities in northern Nigeria.

In recognition of his contribution to journalism and development reporting, the Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) named him its Journalist of the Month.

At the 10th Africa Conference on Development Journalism (ACDJ), Bello will share insights from his field experience in development journalism, drawing on his reporting in health, rural development and underserved communities. His experience offers practical lessons on how journalists can bring community needs to public attention, promote accountability and encourage action on critical development issues.
